How to Hang Mirrors the Right Way?

Mirrors aren’t just for checking your reflection — they bounce light around, make rooms feel bigger, and can be a stunning focal point. But they need to be hung properly to look right and stay safe.
Here’s everything you need to know about hanging mirrors. If you are not sure pictureUP will help to make it look great.

1. Choose the Right Spot

  • Light: Hang mirrors where they reflect natural light to brighten the room, but avoid placing them opposite clutter or messy areas.

  • Height: Just like artwork, aim for the mirror’s center to be at eye level (around 145–150 cm / 57–60 inches from the floor).

  • Purpose:

    • In an entryway → check your look before leaving.

    • Behind a dining table → adds elegance and depth.

    • Living room → reflect light, not the TV!

  • Avoid hanging opposite a window or doorways with lots of light. It will reflect too much light.

  • Better hang it next to it or in a right angle.

  • Mirrors placed along the wall will create the illusion of more space.

2. Use the Right Hardware

Mirrors are often heavier than pictures, so strong fixings are essential.

  • Try to find STUDS for secure hanging, specially for mirrors over 15 kg

  • Wall anchors or toggle bolts for drywall.

  • Masonry screws for brick or concrete.

  • Always check the mirror’s weight and buy hardware that matches.

  • Watch out for sliding doors! Avoid these areas. If you have to hang, try to find the wood frame of the sliding door box and cut anchors and screws to right size so they don't scratch the sliding door!

3. Measure and Mark Carefully

  • Measure the distance from the top of the mirror to the hanging hardware on the back.

  • Mark those points on the wall with a pencil.

  • Use a spirit level to make sure your marks are even.

4. Hanging Styles

  • With D-rings: Use two hooks/nails for stability.

  • With a wire (only for light mirrors up to 5kg): Measure the wire pull (how far it stretches when taut) to place your hook at the right height.

  • French cleat system: Excellent for very heavy mirrors — one piece attaches to the wall, the other to the mirror.

5. Special Considerations

  • Above furniture: Leave about 15–25 cm (6–10 inches) of space between the mirror’s bottom and the top of the furniture.

  • Bathroom mirrors: Make sure they’re sealed against moisture and use proper anchors for tiled walls.

  • Safety: For very large or heavy mirrors, consider professional installation.

💡 Quick Tips for Mirror Hanging Success

  • Use painter’s tape to outline the mirror on the wall before committing.

  • Avoid hanging mirrors where they reflect harsh sunlight — glare can be uncomfortable.

  • Check reflections! A mirror doubling a messy bookshelf or wires isn’t flattering.

✨ Hung well, a mirror doesn’t just reflect your room — it transforms it.
